NCBWA NAMES DIVISION INATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 19. Dallas Baptist senior third baseman Duncan McAlpine was named National Hitter of the Week, while Long Beach State junior right-handed pitcher Shane Carle and Oregon State freshman right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore were named National Co-Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

McAlpine led the Patriots to a 2-2 record last week, highlighted by a win at 18th-ranked Oklahoma. The North Richland, Texas, native hit .550 (11-for-20) with 11 RBI, seven runs, four home runs, three doubles and two walks. He set and then re-set the all-time DBU record for career home runs with four last week, raising his career total to 48. The senior registered 26 total bases and recorded a slugging percentage of 1.300 and an on-base percentage of .591.

Carle struck out a career-high 13 in a complete game shutout of UC Riverside. The Santa Cruz, Calif., native threw 119 pitches in the 5-0 victory, helping the Dirtbags complete a 4-0 week. The 13 strikeouts represented the most by a LBSU pitcher since Jared Hughes had that total in 2006.

It was the first complete game shutout of the year for the Dirtbags, and the second straight complete game for the right-hander, who scattered six hits and walked two, while lowering his ERA to 2.91 on the year.

Moore needed just 93 pitches to toss his second complete-game shutout of the season, a two-hitter, as Oregon State topped rival Oregon 9-0. The Eugene, Ore., product put on a show for his hometown crowd, issuing one walk, while allowing just a pair of runners to advance past second base. He walked the first batter he faced, before retiring 10 in a row over the first 3.1 innings and sat down the final 12 batters of the game.

The Ducks' two hits came by way of a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Moore became the first pitcher to win 11 games in the Pac-12 this season, seven of which have come against league foes. In earning his 11th win, he broke the Oregon State single-season record for wins by a freshman and lowered his season ERA to 1.34.
