DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending February 24. Maryland sophomore outfielder Charlie White was named National Hitter of the Week, while Central Arkansas junior right-handed pitcher Bryce Biggerstaff was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

White Biggerstaff

White served as the Terrapins' catalyst in their four-game series sweep of Oakland, stealing 10 bases in 10 attempts while going 10-of-15 at the plate (.667), drawing five walks and scoring six runs. Three of White's 10 hits went for extra bases, and he drove in five runs. The sophomore center fielder from Naperville, Ill,, stole four bases in game one of the series, the most stolen bases in a single game for a Terrapin since 1998 (Larry Long vs. Howard). White's effort helped Maryland swipe a school-record 11 bases in game one and register 26 stolen bases in the four-game series.

Biggerstaff, a junior right-hander from Sherwood, Arkansas, threw the school's second no-hitter, striking out a career-high nine in the Bears' 13-0 victory over the Jackson State. He had a perfect game through five innings, before hitting the first batter of the sixth inning. Biggerstaff sailed through eight innings, then struck out the first two batters in the ninth and got a ground ball in front of the plate that catcher Michael Marietta gunned to first for the final out.
