NCBWA NAMES DIVISION INATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 12. Florida State freshman outfielder D.J. Stewart was named National Hitter of the Week, while West Virginia sophomore left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave was named National Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Stewart had an outstanding four-game span, hitting .600 (9-for-15) with nine RBI as the Seminoles went 3-1, including a 1-1 split at No. 9 N.C. State. The freshman left fielder recorded at least one hit in all four games, while posting multiple hits and multiple RBI in three of FSU's four games. Stewart opened the week with five hits in nine at-bats as he drove in six and score four times in helping FSU complete a four-game season sweep of Stetson. He followed with four hits in six at-bats in the first two games at N.C. State.

In game two, Stewart helped the Seminoles rebound from a game one loss as the Yulee, Fla., native went 3-for-3 and reached base on all six plate appearances. Stewart recorded two doubles and a single, while driving in three and scoring three times. His three walks tied a career-high. Stewart finished the weekend with five doubles and nine runs scored and in addition to the nine RBIs. Stewart leads all Seminoles in batting with a .329 average on the year.

Musgrave, who earned his second NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week honor (April 23) led the Mountaineers to a 2-0 win in game one against TCU with a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits in 9.0 innings. The Bridgeport, W. Va., native struck out a career-high 14 batters, walking just one, in the 143 pitch effort (104 strikes). His 14 strikeouts were a single-season high in the Big 12 this season. Musgrave retired the Horned Frogs in order in the first, second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, including a streak of 15-consecutive batters from the third to the eighth innings.

For the season, Musgrave is 8-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 13 starts with three complete games, three shutouts and 76 strikeouts.
