DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending May 17. Georgia Tech junior catcher Vahn Lackey and Miami (Ohio) redshirt junior outfielder Tommy Harrison were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Georgia Tech junior right-handed pitcher Tate McKee and Hawaii junior right-handed pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno were named Co-National Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board has reviewed candidates from each Division I Conference and named winners each Tuesday throughout the season. These are the season's final selections.
Lackey went 10-of-15 (.667) a the plate for the week, leading Georgia Tech to its second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship. The Suwanee, Georgia, native recored six extra base hits, including three doubles, two home runs and a triple. He drove in 12 runs in four games while scoring 10 runs. He paced the Georgia Tech offense which exploded for 39 runs in the three-game sweep of a ranked Boston College team.
Harrison exploded for four home runs in last weekend's series at Akron to help Miami Baseball seal its second consecutive regular-season MAC title. The Cleveland, Ohio, native went 9-for-15 (.600) at the plate against the Zips (including a 5-for-5 showing Friday) with a slugging percentage of 1.400 and drove in 13 runs, scoring seven. He hit a grand slam Thursday, a two-run homer and a solo shot Friday and capped off a monster weekend with a three-run blast Saturday.
McKee delivered one of the best pitching performances in program history on Thursday night. After enduring a two-hour weather delay that saw the game begin at 8:03 p.m., the Kennesaw, Georgia, native took the mound and produced 7.0 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and a career high 14 strikeouts. He only allowed three baserunners all evening, striking out the side in the 1st, 3rd and 6th innings. His 14 strikeouts were the most in an ACC game by a GT pitcher since 2018 (Connor Thomas – 17) as he helped Tech to the first one-hit shutout over nine innings since at least the turn of the century and ACC win No. 23.
Magdaleno earned his second NCBWA National Co-Pitcher of the Week this season (May 5) delivered his second complete-game, one-hit shutout in his last three starts, propelling the Rainbow Warriors to a 4-0 victory over CSUN on Wednesday night. The Los Angeles native completely overpowered the Matadors, striking out 14 batters without issuing a single walk to secure his seventh win of the season.
The ace was flawless for nearly the entire evening against CSUN, allowing just a solitary single to Mateo Rickman in the fifth inning. Magdaleno hit two batters but was otherwise perfect, efficiently throwing 71 of his 101 pitches for strikes while facing only 30 batters in the 9.0-inning masterpiece.
