DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards for the week ending February 22. Arkansas-Monticello senior Eli Marvin is the National Hitter of the Week and Saginaw Valley State freshman right-hander Jack Sequin is the National Pitcher of the Week.
Marvin (Ellsinore, Mo. / Three Rivers CC) went 14-for-19 across four games to raise his early-season average from .240 to .455. He scored twice and stole a base against Delta State. Against Oklahoma Baptist, he homered and drove in seven in the opening game of the series. He went 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in the second game. In the finale, he hit two home runs, drove in three and scored three runs. On the week, he homered four times, drove in 14 runs and scored nine times, while slugging 1.421.
Sequin (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) threw the second Cardinal no-hitter of the 21st century on Saturday in a 9-0 win over Lake Erie. In his second career start, the freshman pitched seven innings, allowed two walks and hit a batter, and struck out six. He also rolled up a double play and had a runner thrown out on the base paths to face one batter above the minimum. In the outing, Sequin threw an efficient 71 pitches, throwing just over 10 pitches an inning.
