Nebraska-Kearney's Barnes, Colorado Mesa's Snell honored

DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its weekly NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards for the period ending March 4th. Nebraska-Kearney first baseman Tommy Barnes is the National Hitter of the Week while Colorado Mesa junior righthander Nolan Snell is the National Pitcher of the Week.

Tommy Barnes (Perry Hall, Md.) batted .1.000, going 12-for-12 with five extra-base hits, 13 RBI and nine runs scored in a perfect weekend at Colorado Christian. He was 4-for-4 in each of the three games with two home runs, both coming in Saturday's win as he drove in six runs in that contest. Barnes also walked three times over the weekend.

Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.) tossed his first career shutout, a four-hitter on Saturday in a nine-inning 4-0 win at Metro State. Snell fanned eight batters and walked just three. He allowed a .143 batting average and no extra-base hits.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Howser Award Player of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication and writing contests.
