DALLAS (FWAA) – The Oklahoma Sooners scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams before Tate Sandell kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to defeat No. 1 Texas, 27-24, Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. For rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit and defeating the nation’s top-ranked team, the Sooners earned the Pop-Tarts Bowl Crazy Good Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Oct. 10, as selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America.
Oklahoma’s 10th selection gives the Sooners sole possession of the award’s all-time lead, breaking a tie with Michigan State. Oklahoma was most recently honored following its victory at Alabama last November. This is the 331st selection in the award’s 25 seasons.
The Texas-Oklahoma rivalry has now produced seven National Team of the Week selections since the award began in 2002. Oklahoma previously earned the honor for its 65-13 victory in 2003, while Texas was recognized following wins in 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018 and '22.
Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 SEC) intercepted two fourth-quarter passes. Peyton Bowen returned the first 42 yards for a touchdown and a 24-17 lead. After Texas tied the game, Courtland Guillory’s interception with 19 seconds remaining gave the Sooners their final opportunity.
John Mateer completed consecutive passes of 13 and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna III to position Sandell for the winning kick. Sandell also made a 53-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Danny Okoye blocked a punt that Dakoda Fields recovered in the end zone for Oklahoma’s first touchdown. Lloyd Avant added a two-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.
The Sooners earned their first victory over a No. 1 opponent since defeating Missouri in 2007. Oklahoma hosts Kentucky on Saturday.
