Fresno State's Ahmady drives in 14; Lipsomb's McClurg, USD's Romanski share pitching honors
NCBWA NAMES PRO-LINE ATHLETIC
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 1. Fresno State sophomore infielder Alan Ahmady was named National Hitter of the Week, while Lipscomb's junior right-handed pitcher Brandon McClurg and San Diego's junior left-handed pitcher Josh Romanski were named National Co-Pitchers of the Week.

Pro-Line Athletic: The Choice of Champions. The NCBWA board reviews candidates from each Division I conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Ahmady, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif., hit .583 with 14 hits, eight runs scored, six doubles, three home runs, and 14 RBI as Fresno State went 5-1 last week. In four conference games against Nevada, he hit .600 in 15 at bats with three homers and 10 RBI. He also scored seven runs and had a slugging percentage of 1.467 during the four games against the Pack.

On Saturday, McClurg, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., turned in the Atlantic Sun's first no hitter since Florida Atlantic's Mickey Storey no-hit Campbell two years ago. In the second game of the three-game set with the Owls, McClurg needed 113 pitches in his masterpiece. He struck out 10, a season high for the mechanical engineering major. His no hitter extended a three-start span in which McClurg has posted a 0.78 ERA over 23.0 innings, while recording three wins and 28 strikeouts.

Romanski tossed the first no-hitter in 12 years at USD in a win over Harvard this past Monday. Romanski faced one above the minimum in the game as he retired the first 13 batters he faced, before he hit Harvard's Matt Kramer in the top of the fifth inning. The Corona, Calif., native retired the remaining 14 batters, while posting a season-high eight strikeouts in the win. The Crimson nearly broke up the no-hitter in the seventh inning on a well hit ball to the left side, but shortstop Sean Nicol dove on the ball to knock it down, then popped up and just made the throw in time to preserve the no-hitter.

With this week's honor, McClurg and Romanski automatically are named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.
