INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA) – Jeff Hunter of Keene State University (Keene, N.H.) and Maggie Robbins of Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending November 27.
Hunter, a 6-7 senior guard from Hudson, Mass., is receiving the award for the second consecutive week. In a pair of contests last week, he averaged a double-doubles in two victories for No. 14 (D3hoops.com) Keene State. Against Springfield on Tuesday, Hunter scored 20 points (8-of-10 FG, 4-of-6 FT), grabbed 11 rebounds, had three assists, four steals, and added seven blocks in the Owls’ 113-75 victory. He returned to the court on Saturday and totaled 27 points (13-of-14 FG, 1-of-4 FT), 10 rebounds, an assist, two steals, and three blocks in his team’s 102-90 win over MIT. For the week, Hunter averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 assists while shooting 87.5 percent (21-of-24) from the field and 50 percent (5-of-10) from the foul line. He currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III in field goal percentage (75 percent) and fifth in total rebounds (73) and block (763). For his efforts, Hunter was also selected Little East Conference Player of the Week.
Robbins, a 5-3 senior guard from Plano, Texas, led No. 4 (D3hoops.com) Trinity to three victories last week, two against then-No. 18 Hardin-Simmons. In the first of those two matchups, Robbins had 12 points (4-of-8 FG, 3-of-4 FT, 1-of-1 3FG), five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the Tigers’ 76-69 win. In the rematch on Saturday, she totaled 18 points (7-of-16 FG, 4-of-7 FT), six rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and a block in her team’s 81-68 victory. The next day against LeTourneau, Robbins scored a career-high 20 points (8-of-12 FG, 3-of-5 FT, 1-1 3FG) and added nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block in the 93-55 victory. For the week, Robbins averaged 16.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.3 steals, and 0.6 blocks while shooting 52.8 percent (19-of-36) from the field, 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the foul line and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from three-point range. For her efforts, Robbins was also selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Player of the Week.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the eighth season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
