UTSA'S JACKSON IS OSCAR ROBERTSON NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected UTSA guard Jhivvan Jackson as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 22.

Oscar Robertson TrophyAs the Conference USA Player of the Week, Jackson was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. Once again, the USBWA will select a Division I men's National Player of the Week each Tuesday throughout the season. The USBWA has named Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week since the 2009-10 season.

Jackson, a 6-0 junior from Euless, Texas, averaged 34.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games last week. A 41-point outburst in an 89-70 win over Illinois State marked the seventh-most points scored in UTSA single-game history and was the 12th 30-plus point game of his career. He was 12 for 12 from the free-throw line, equaling a program record and becoming the 10th player in program history with at least 10 makes without a miss.

Originally from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Jackson, the nation's leading scorer with 26.8 points per game scored 28 points last Wednesday in an 88-78 loss to Oregon State in Houston's Toyota Center; he then followed that up with his 41-point performance to give him four straight games with at least 28 points.

As a freshman, we won Conference USA's scoring crown two years ago with a 22.9 average. This season, he has twice been named the league's player of the week to give him a total of 12 career weekly league player of the week honors.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
