DALLAS (FWAA) – Colorado two-way lineman Chauncey Gooden started at guard and bolstered a power running game, then came in on the defensive front and contributed to the Buffaloes’ final stop that sealed a 14-13 win at Georgia Tech. For his efforts on both sides of the line, Gooden earned the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week honor for games during the weekend of Sept. 5, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.
This is the fourth season for the FWAA to select an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week as part of the NCFAA's weekly national honors from 12 awards. The recipient of the 2026 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Dec. 11. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 27, 2026.
The weekly winners, including Gooden this week, are added to the preseason Outland Trophy watch list going forward. No Colorado player has won the Outland Trophy. The Buffaloes’ two finalists were offensive tackle Nate Solder (2010) and guard Joe Garten (1990).
Gooden, a 6-3, 380-pound sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., anchored a front that produced 183 rushing yards on 49 carries, produced 13 rushing first downs and held the ball for 34:09. The 183 rushing yards are the third-best total under Sanders at Colorado. Gooden and the offensive front led a push that rallied Colorado into the lead in the final minutes. The Buffs trailed 13-7 with under two minutes left when quarterback Julian Lewis led the team on an 8-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a 20-yard touchdown throw to Charlie Williams with 37 seconds left.
Earlier, Colorado’s offensive front showed its dominance in one specific drive, a 17-play, 61-yard march in which the Buffaloes ran 15 consecutive times. Per Pro Football Focus, the line graded 91.5 in pass protection (one sack, two hits allowed) and 84.5 in run blocking.
Gooden also contributed on defense, becoming he fourth Colorado player to play both ways under Coach Deion Sanders, joining Travis Hunter, Isaiah Hardge and Tyler Brown. Inserted into the interior defensive line in goal-line situations, Gooden recorded a tackle for no gain on a first-and-goal from the 9-yard line that helped hold Georgia Tech to a field goal and a 13-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
The FWAA will announce the Outland Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 18, and those players will then be paired down to three finalists announced on Nov. 24. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from those finalists who will be part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends and edge rushers are not eligible.
The Outland Trophy, celebrating 81 years since its founding, is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.
