North Carolina's Johnson nominated for Orange Bowl Courage Award

DALLAS (FWAA) — North Carolina’s Max Johnson is this week’s nominee for the 2025 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Johnson, a sixth-year senior quarterback, overcame a potentially debilitating knee injury to return to the field for the Tar Heels this season.

Max Johnson"I want to play football," Johnson told ESPN.com of why he put himself through grueling rehab. "That's what I want to do. I'll never give up."

Johnson suffered a broken right leg in the opening game of the 2024 season at Minnesota. He was carted off the field, and he and his family had to stay in Minneapolis for an extended period of time. He underwent five surgeries in total.

Through it all, Johnson remained determined to continue his football career. He returned to football in fall camp, competing for the Tar Heels’ starting quarterback job.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Johnson returned for UNC’s season opener against TCU, completing 9 of 11 passes for 103 yards and one touchdown in reserve action. He then relieved an injured Gio Lopez on Sept. 20 at UCF, completing 11 of 19 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson began his career at LSU in 2020, transferred to Texas A&M ahead of the 2022 season, then transferred to UNC for 2024. The son of Super Bowl-winning QB Brad Johnson, Max Johnson has played for national-championship winning coaches in Ed Orgeron, Jimbo Fisher and Mack Brown, and he now plays for a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach in Bill Belichick.

For his career, Johnson has completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 6,094 yards with 49 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He has six career rushing touchdowns, too.

The Courage Award was first presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) in 2002. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship. The winner of the award will be included in festivities during Capital One Orange Bowl week and receive his trophy at an on-field presentation.
