NCBWA NAMES DIVISION INATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 30. Texas Tech senior infielder Hunter Hargrove was named National Hitter of the Week, while Oregon junior left-handed pitcher David Peterson was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Hargrove racked up a .500/.722/.583 line in five games last week. The Mansfield, Texas, native recorded nine hits in 18 at-bats, along with five walks, six RBI, while scoring six more for 13 total bases. He was instrumental in Tech's 61 runs and 67 hits overall last week, as Hargrove tied with teammate Brian Klein for the most hits and hits per game at nine and 1.80, respectively. He helped Tech to a series victory over No. 2 TCU and had multi-hit performances against New Mexico (four) and TCU (three). Hargrove's week extended his conference-leading hit-total to 66, his double figures to 19 and total bases to 104.

Peterson earned the honor after a dominating win over Arizona State on April 28. The Ducks' Friday night starter pitched a complete-game shutout striking out 20 while allowing just four hits and one walk. The 20 strikeouts was an Oregon record and matched the most by a player in college baseball this season. The Denver, Colo., natives performance also matched the most strikeouts ever against an Arizona State team and was the most against a Sun Devils team in a nine-inning game. The complete game was the first of Peterson's career.
