WRIGHT, McMILLIAN ARE USBWA WOMEN'SNATIONAL, FRESHMAN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) For the season's 13th U.S. Basketball Writers Association Ann Meyers Drysdale Women's National Player of the Week and the organization's women's freshman player honor, UCF guard Kay Kay Wright is national player while Charlotte guard Jada McMillian has been tabbed for the freshman citation after each was involved in helping their teams go unbeaten in games ending the week of Sunday, Feb. 24.

The USBWA weekly honors for Division I women's players will be handed out each Tuesday this season.

As the American Athletic Conference player and Conference USA freshman weekly winners, both were nominated for the awards, which were chosen by Mel Greenberg, the USBWA coordinator for women's basketball, primarily from a pair of lists of Division I conference players and freshmen players of the week.

Wright, a 5-7 junior guard from Orlando, Fla., in two wins over Wichita State and Temple that reached and matched the most season victories for the Knights since joining Division I, was UCFs leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game along with 2.5 assists, while shooting 51 percent from the field. She also collected her 1,000th career point along the way and has now reached the 20-point mark in 13 games on the season.

McMillian, a 5-7 guard from Raleigh, N.C., in her first start in the Niners' road win over Old Dominion, replacing all-conference performer Laia Ravents, finished with a career-best 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting, making all five of her attempts from inside the 3-point arc, and added 7-of-12 at the line in a career-high 29 minutes. Previously, she averaged 1.8 points in 25 games. She also had an assist and blocked a shot running the point position. The victory was the first for Charlotte on the road in league play and its first road win since last November.

Since the 1987-88 season, the USBWA has named a women's National Player of the Year. For the 2012-13 season, the national and weekly player award has been named for Hall of Famer and former UCLA All-American Ann Meyers Drysdale. At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA. The winner of the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year will be announced and presented at the USBWAs annual awards event in Tampa, site of the 2019 NCAA Women·s Final Four.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected a women's All-America team since the 1996-97 season.
