3rd And Long: Gambling and the Transfer Portal combine for college football trouble

It made headline news a month ago and now has dropped off the charts until the 2026 college football season kicks off in August.

But make no mistake, the trials and tribulations of newly minted (perhaps) Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is a trailblazing event and the powers that be in CFB need to be making contingency plans to handle the tsunami that is approaching

What's this about?

Sorsby is the poster child for the 2026 transfer portal season, coming from a career at Cincinnati where he threw 60 TD passes and rushed for 24 touchdowns before taking the money--an estimated  $6 million --from Texas Tech, a rising star  in fhe new wave of instant title contenders in an Name, Image and Likeness and the transfer portal era which has changed the face of college football.

The X  factor here is the concurrent rise in the gambling aspect of college football, which has changed from it doesn't matter how you play a game, but rather whether your team covers the point spread or matches or beats the over-under line on points scored.

Sorsby has not been implicated in anything, but stunned everyone when he announced he was seeking treatment for gambling addiction.

His football career at Texas Tech is now on pause.

What the powers that be in CFB are reluctant to concede is that major college football is now NFL-lite.

It's NEVER going back.

If you want  Saturday afternoon tailgate  parties or pep rallies  watch Division III Williams-Amherst..

STUDENT-ATHLETE?

Please.

It's a world which needs  salary-caps, workman's compensation and other job related provisions.

It's all about the money.

The Big Ten, which has produced the last two national champions is paying its schools $95  million a year in media revenue rights fees. The Southeastern Conference is at 75 million and climbing.

The  college football season starts in August and ends in late January.

Under the best of circumstances it is a billion dollar business which is tough to run and harder to control, even with a strict set of rules.

Right  now college football has few guard rails.

Betting on the sport by its players or coaches is just one issue, but it needs to be controlled ASAP.

Strong UNIFIED leadership needs to take control, but it doesn't exist.

Summer is almost here and another season is approaching, but pay attention to the storm warnings.
