Association continues to honor Div. III standouts

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

ST. LOUIS (USBWA)Hamed Shamseldin of The College at Brockport (Brockport, N.Y.) and Bryce Frank of Austin College (Sherman, Texas) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending December 3.

Shamseldin, a 6-0 senior guard from Lawrence, N.Y., led the Golden Eagles (4-2) to a 3-1 week by averaging 26 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He opened the week on Monday with his first career triple-double in a 90-75 win over Medaille, totaling 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Then, the next day against then-No. 19 (D3Hoops.com) Hobart, Shamseldin scored a career-high 42 points to go along with nine rebounds, six assists, and six steals in the team’s 89-83 victory. He shot 17-of-20 from the foul line in the contest while also reaching the 1,000-point career scoring plateau. Shamseldin went on to record eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a 79-71 win over New Paltz on Friday before capping his week with 28 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal in an 87-83 loss to Oneonta on Saturday. For his efforts, Shamseldin was also named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Week.

Frank, a 6-2 junior forward from Granbury, Texas, averaged a double-double in Austin College’s (4-4) two victories last week. In a 71-48 win over Pomoma-Pitzer on Friday, Frank played only 25 minutes but still tallied 12 points (5-of-9 FG, 2-of-2 3FG), six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The next day, against then-No. 13 (D3Hoops.com) Washington-St. Louis, she scored 30 points (12-of-26 FG, 6-of-8 FT), grabbed 15 rebounds and added two assists as the ‘Roos pinned only the fifth home loss in the past six years on the Bears, 85-77. For the week, Frank averaged 21 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the field (17-of-35) and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the foul line. For her efforts, Frank was named MVP of Washington-St. Louis’ McWilliams Classic and Player of the Week in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).

Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the fourth season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
