DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its NCAA Division II National Player of the Week awards for the period ending Feb. 27. Arkansas-Monticello junior outfielder Wayne Hawkins is the National Hitter of the Week while Northern Kentucky senior left-hander Dave Middendorf is the National Pitcher of the Week.
Hawkins led the Boll Weevils to a four-game split versus Missouri S&T this past weekend. The outfielder amassed a .667 batting average (8-12), scoring six runs and driving in seven more. The Memphis, Tenn. native, also swiped four bases on the week. In the series-opening 12-6 victory over the Miners, Hawkins was 4-for-4 with six RBI.
Dave Middendorfs complete-game two-hitter helped push the Norse to a 10-1 victory on the road versus Ouachita Baptist. After surrendering an unearned run in the first inning, the lefty went on to retire 15 of the next 16 batters he faced. All told, Middendorf struck out 10 Tiger hitters in picking up his first win of the season.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Howser Award Player of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication and writing contests.
