Mississippi College's Bell, WNEC's Michaud honored Bookmark and Share

DALLAS (NCBWA) – Bo Bell of Mississippi College rang up a big week at the plate while Evan Michaud of Western New England College picked up two wins to earn the sixth NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors for 2009, covering the week of March 30-April 5, as voted on by a panel of members from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Bell, a junior outfielder from Gulfport, Miss., went 9-for-15 (.600) with four home runs, two doubles and 16 RBIs, posting a 1.503 slugging percentage, to pace a 5-0 week that included an East Division sweep of East Texas Baptist. He also walked four times, compiling a .739 on base percentage, and scored 11 runs. He was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Hitter of the Week, winning the division’s top weekly hitting award for the second time this season. He was 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs in two games against Rust. He drove in five runs in back-to-back games against ETBU, including 3-for-3 with two home runs in the second game. Bell is batting .449 with 9 home runs, 9 doubles and two triples this season for the Choctaws while driving in 49 runs.

Michaud, a sophomore right-hander from Windsor Locks, Conn., posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in 14 innings after allowing only 10 hits with nine strikeouts and five walks. He went seven innings, giving up five hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts and a pair of walks, in an 11-2 win over city rival Springfield. He later fired a five-hitter for his first shutout of the season and second of his career, with five strikeouts and three walks, in a 12-0 win at Endicott that gave the Golden Bears a sweep of the Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
