The
company name is derived from a Dallas icon and landmark,
Big Tex (at left). The 52-foot statue has welcomed visitors
to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas' Fair Park since 1952. He sports
a 75-gallon hat and size 70 cowboy boots. And, basically, when you enter
the fair, you are almost instinctively inclined to shout "Hi, Tex!"
That may be from where the company name is derived, but it originally
came from conversations between HiTEX! Enterprises president
Ted Gangi and former CBS Sports colleague
Kyle Tilton some time in the early '90s. Gangi, a New York native,
and Tilton, a native Texan, talked about one day starting their own
media company, often while working late nights at "Black Rock" or the
CBS Broadcast Center in New York.
In 1991, Tilton passed away and Gangi kept his promise when forming
the company with another native Texan and fellow SMU grad
Cody Monk in 1998. Thus the name HiTEX!
Enterprises.
