West Virginia earns Team of the Week honor

DALLAS (FWAA) – The Oklahoma Sooners and Miami Hurricanes are unanimous 1-2 in the FWAA/Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll this week. The Sooners kept their record perfect with a 34-20 win at Colorado, while Miami took the week off to prepare for a Big East showdown with Virginia Tech.

This week's FWAA National Team of the Week, the West Virginia Mountaineers, earned the honor by knocking off previously unbeaten Virginia Tech, 28-7, last Thursday, dropping the Hokies down to No. 10 in the Super 16. Quincy Wilson ran for 178 yards and a score to help the Mountaineers land their biggest upset in school history.

The Virginia Tech loss paved the way for USC and Georgia to each move up a spot to Nos. 3 and 4. Washington State survived a scare from Oregon State, but dropped a spot from No. 6 to No. 7 and Florida State vaulted from No. 8 to No. 5. LSU joined the Seminoles in moving up the ranks three notches, from No. 9 to No. 6 this week.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma State moved into the Super 16 for the first time and Iowa regained mention in the rankings. Other movers in the poll this week included Nebraska (up to No. 11) and Michigan (up to No. 12). Auburn and Northern Illinois dropped out.

Other teams nominated for Team of the Week included Bowling Green, LSU and Tennessee.

The FWAA National Team of the Week will continue to be announced in conjunction with the Grantland Rice Super 16 each Monday throughout the season.
