LAS VEGAS (AFLWA) – A player can't do any better than
perfection, and that is what San Jose SaberCats quarterback Mark
Grieb achieved, earning him the Arena Football League Writers
Association (AFLWA) Player of the Week.
Grieb went 15-for-15 for 331 yards with eight touchdowns, posting
a perfect passing rating of 158.3 in San Jose's 89-41 victory over
the Colorado Crush. He also set a league record with most passes
in a perfect-completion game, surpassing the previous record of
11-for-11 by Carlos Garay of the Carolina Cobras in 2000.
"We've never had a game like this before," Grieb told the Denver
Post. "I don't want to slight anybody, but there were a lot of open
receivers out there tonight. We had a lot of the right calls.
"Despite completing all of my passes, I still wouldn't say it
was a perfect game. There's no point in scoring 100 points. If you
do, you're just doing it for the record book. To me, that's not
why we're playing the game."
Grieb has quarterbacked the SaberCats to two of the past three
ArenaBowl titles. He was the league's Offensive Player of the Year
in 2002.
The AFLWA, founded at the start of the 2004 season, is a national
organization made up of media members who cover the Arena Football
League. Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is
the AFLWA's founder and executive director. The association's website
