LAS VEGAS (AFLWA) – Though quarterback Tony Graziani is
Philadelphia's focal point, offensive specialist Steve Smith
showed the Soul relies on more than just one person.
Because of Smith's production in a 59-48 victory over the Nashville
Kats, he was chosen the Arena Football League Writers Association
(AFLWA) Player of the Week.
Smith caught eight passes for 131 yards with two touchdowns,
and returned a kick 49 yards for another score.
"Smith is probably the quickest guy in the league," Graziani
told The Daily Times in Delaware County, Pa. "I just try to get
the ball in his hands and let him make his moves. He did a good
job of getting open."
Graziani reportedly is the league's highest-paid player, earning
$750,000 over three years after signing a free-agent deal.
However, Smith was another big free-agent acquisition. He showed
his explosiveness last season while returning five kicks for touchdowns
for the Grand Rapids Rampage.
The AFLWA, founded at the start of the 2004 season, is a national
organization made up of media members who cover the Arena Football
League. Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is
the AFLWA's founder and executive director. The association's website
is www.aflwa.com.
