LAS VEGAS (AFLWA) – The San Jose SaberCats solidified
the top spot in the Top 8 Poll, which was released Wednesday by
the Arena Football League Writers Association (AFLWA).
San Jose (3-0) received 18 first-place votes and totaled 158
points, and the No. 2 Chicago Rush (4-0) picked up the other two
first-place votes and had 142 points. Both clubs, the only undefeated
teams remaining, were either No. 1 or No. 2 on every ballot.
The SaberCats easily defeated the Grand Rapids Rampage last week,
but the Rush survived an upset bid by the Indiana Firebirds. San
Jose won 62-31, and Chicago emerged with a 49-46 victory.
Moving up three spots to No. 3 was the Colorado Crush (3-1),
a 37-35 winner over the Austin Wranglers (2-1). Austin dropped two
places to No. 7.
Also making a big move was the Dallas Desperados (3-1), who advanced
four places to No. 4 following their 51-35 victory over the Columbus
Destroyers.
Despite losing 50-30 to the Las Vegas Gladiators, the New Orleans
VooDoo (3-1) dropped just one spot to No. 5. Also taking a tumble
were the Los Angeles Avengers (2-2), who were beaten 53-52 by the
Georgia Force to go from No. 3 to No. 6.
The Detroit Fury (2-1) did not play, but still moved into the
poll at No. 8. Detroit took the place of the Carolina Cobras (2-2),
who were beaten by the Orlando Predators 59-43.
Detroit is at Colorado in the only game between ranked teams
this week. Other games involving ranked teams are San Jose at the
New York Dragons (1-3), Chicago at the Philadelphia Soul (1-3),
Grand Rapids (0-4) at Dallas, the Tampa Bay Storm (2-2) at New Orleans
and Carolina at Austin. Los Angeles is off.
