LAS VEGAS (AFLWA) – After knocking off the top-ranked
Los Angeles Avengers, the San Jose SaberCats moved back into
first place in this week's poll, which was conducted by the Arena
Football League Writers Association.
San Jose (2-0) was No. 1 in the preseason and first regular-season
polls, but fell to No. 2 behind Los Angeles last week. However,
the SaberCats went to Los Angeles on Sunday and beat the Avengers
61-55.
The SaberCats received 14 first-place votes and 140 points overall.
Los Angeles (2-1) dropped to No. 3 with 94 points.
The Chicago Rush (3-0) picked up the four remaining first-place
votes, and moved up a spot to No. 2 with 125 points. Chicago routed
Colorado 65-35 last week to drop the Crush (2-1) a spot to No. 6.
Moving up four places was the New Orleans VooDoo, an expansion
team that is 3-0. New Orleans edged the Georgia Force 55-52.
Another expansion team, the Austin Wranglers, entered the poll
at No. 5. Austin (2-0) beat the defending champion Tampa Bay Storm
56-48. Tampa Bay (1-2), which was No. 6, dropped out of the rankings.
Sliding three spaces to No. 7 was the Carolina Cobras (2-1),
who lost to the Arizona Rattlers 45-38.
The Dallas Deperados (2-1) entered the poll at No. 8 after knocking
the New York Dragons (1-2) out of the rankings with a 56-44 defeat.
New York was No. 7.
Only one game this week involves ranked teams against each other
– Austin at Colorado. Other games that include ranked teams are
San Jose against the Grand Rapids Rampage (0-3), Chicago at the
Indiana Firebirds (0-3), Los Angeles against the Georgia Force (1-2),
New Orleans at the Las Vegas Gladiators (1-2), Carolina against
the Orlando Predators (0-2) and Dallas at the Columbus Destroyers
(1-2).
