LAS VEGAS (AFLWA) – New York Dragons quarterback Aaron
Garcia threw nine touchdown passes to help hand the San Jose
SaberCats their first defeat, and he was named the Player of the
Week by the board of directors of the Arena Football League Writers
Association (AFLWA).
San Jose (3-1) entered the game No. 1 in the AFLWA poll, but
Garcia led the Dragons (2-3) to the upset victory by rallying New
York from a 47-37 deficit.
His 15-yard touchdown pass to William Holder with 3:06 left put
the Dragons ahead for good at 57-50. Garcia added a final touchdown
with no time remaining when he completed a 23-yard pass to Cosmo
DeMatteo for the 64-50 final score. That pass made Garcia 19 of
21 for 285 yards.
Garcia was league Offensive Player of the Year in 2001 after
becoming the first player to throw at 100 touchdown passes in a
season. He reached that mark against last season.
The AFLWA, founded at the start of the 2004 season, is a national
organization made up of media members who cover the Arena Football
League. Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is
the AFLWA's founder and executive director.
